What is the capital of Honduras?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Honduras is Tegucigalpa.

Tegucigalpa is Honduras's political and administrative center, located in a mountain valley in the southern-central highlands. It forms a single national-capital area with Comayagüela, its sister city across the Choluteca River. Legally, the two cities together make up the Municipality of the Central District, which is the capital district of Honduras.

Tegucigalpa became the permanent capital on 30 October 1880, when President Marco Aurelio Soto moved the seat of government from Comayagua. Earlier, Honduras had alternated its capital between Tegucigalpa and Comayagua, which explains why Comayagua sometimes appears in historical accounts of the country's capitals.

Comayagua, La Ceiba, and San Pedro Sula are significant Honduran cities, but they are not the current national capital. A precise constitutional description names Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela jointly, while ordinary quizzes conventionally accept Tegucigalpa.
