What is the capital of Guatemala?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Guatemala is Guatemala City.

Guatemala City, officially Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, is located in the Valle de la Ermita in south-central Guatemala. It is the country's largest city and the center of national government, finance, culture, transportation, and commerce. Its metropolitan area is also the largest in Central America.

The present capital was established after the 1773 Santa Marta earthquakes severely damaged Antigua Guatemala, the former colonial capital. Spanish authorities moved the capital to the new site in 1776. Guatemala City later became the setting for the signing of the Act of Independence of Central America on 15 September 1821.

The city also incorporates the legacy of Kaminaljuyu, an important Maya settlement occupied primarily from about 1500 BCE to 1200 CE. Antigua Guatemala remains a famous historic city and tourist destination, while Quetzaltenango is a major highland center, but neither is the national capital.
