What is the capital of Georgia?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Georgia? The answer is Atlanta.

Atlanta is Georgia’s capital and most populous city. It began in 1837 as a settlement at the endpoint of a railroad line and was initially known as Terminus. The growing rail junction was renamed Atlanta in 1847, helping establish the city as a transportation and commercial center in the southeastern United States.

The city was largely destroyed during the Civil War, but it rebuilt rapidly afterward. Its phoenix symbol and motto, “Resurgens,” reflect this recovery. Atlanta later became a major center of the civil rights movement, associated with leaders including Martin Luther King Jr., who was born there and whose childhood home and church are important historic sites.

Columbus, Augusta, and Savannah are easy choices to confuse with Atlanta. Augusta was Georgia’s capital for several periods, and Savannah was the colony’s first capital. Atlanta became the permanent state capital in 1868 and remains the seat of Georgia’s governor, legislature, and supreme court.
