What is the capital of Curaçao?
Answer
Willemstad
Answer
Willemstad
The capital of Curaçao is Willemstad.
Willemstad became a Dutch stronghold after the Dutch West India Company captured Curaçao from Spain in 1634. The original settlement grew around Punda, a fortified district whose name comes from the Dutch word for “point.”
The city later expanded across the harbor into districts including Otrobanda, while Pietermaai developed outside the original walls. Willemstad became a major Caribbean trading center and was historically connected to the Atlantic slave trade, a difficult part of its past that remains important to understanding the city’s history.
Its colorful waterfront architecture is internationally recognized. The Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Curaçao is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Willemstad is both its capital and largest city.
