What is the capital of Barbados?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown.

Bridgetown is the capital and largest city of Barbados, located on the island’s southwestern coast beside Carlisle Bay. It is the country’s main administrative, commercial, financial, and transport center, as well as an important Caribbean cruise port.

English settlement at the present site began in 1628. The area was initially known as the Town of Saint Michael, but it later became Bridgetown, a name associated with an early bridge over the Careenage and with Sir Tobias Bridge. The settlement’s port helped make it one of the most important cities in the English Caribbean.

Bridgetown became a city in 1824. Its historic core and nearby military district were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 as Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison. The city is sometimes simply called “Town” by Barbadians.

Oistins, Holetown, and Speightstown are significant settlements, but Bridgetown is the national capital. Barbados became independent from the United Kingdom in 1966 while retaining Bridgetown as its capital.
