What is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda?
Answer
St. John's
Answer
St. John's
The capital of Antigua and Barbuda is St. John's.
St. John's lies on the western side of Antigua around St. John's Harbour and is the country's largest city, chief economic centre, and political hub. Government House, Parliament, the High Court, and the prime minister's office are all located there.
The settlement expanded after a French invasion in 1666, when the harbour's strategic position encouraged the town's development. It became an official trading point in 1675 and had overtaken Falmouth in population by 1689. The name refers to Saint John, one of the country's parishes.
A common mix-up is All Saints, Antigua's second-largest settlement, or Falmouth, an important historic harbour. Neither is the national capital. St. John's is also distinct from Saint John Parish: the city is the parish capital, while the country itself is Antigua and Barbuda.
