What is the capital of Alaska?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Alaska? Juneau is the capital of Alaska.

Juneau sits in Southeast Alaska along the Gastineau Channel, surrounded by the Coast Mountains and waterways of the Alexander Archipelago. It is unusual among U.S. state capitals because it has no road connection to the rest of Alaska; visitors generally arrive by air or sea.

The settlement began during the 1880 gold rush and was named for prospector Joe Juneau. Alaska’s capital moved from Sitka to Juneau in 1906, after Congress directed the transfer of the territorial government. That history explains a common mix-up: Sitka was the earlier capital, while Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city but not its capital.

Today, Juneau is officially a consolidated city and borough. In 1970, Juneau, Douglas, and the surrounding borough merged into the present municipality, which is extraordinarily large in area.
