What is the capital city of Thailand?

The story behind the answer

The capital city of Thailand is Bangkok.

Bangkok is Thailand’s largest city and its main center for government, finance, commerce, education, and transport. It stands on the Chao Phraya River near the Gulf of Thailand and is often called Krung Thep in Thai.

The city became the capital in 1782, when King Rama I established the Chakri dynasty and moved the royal seat across the river from Thonburi. The official ceremonial name of Bangkok is extraordinarily long and is listed by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest place name.

Bangkok combines royal temples, modern shopping districts, canals, and dense urban neighborhoods. Wat Phra Kaew, the Grand Palace, and Wat Arun are among its best-known landmarks. “Bangkok” remains the city’s standard English name.
