What is the capital city of New Brunswick, Canada?
Answer
Fredericton
Answer
Fredericton
The capital city of New Brunswick, Canada, is Fredericton. It stands in the west-central part of the province on the Saint John River, also known by its Wolastoqiyik name, the Wolastoq.
Fredericton became the capital of the new colony of New Brunswick in the 1780s after the province was separated from Nova Scotia. Loyalists settled the area after the American Revolution, and the town was renamed Fredericstown in honour of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. The name was later shortened to Fredericton.
The city remains an important centre of provincial government, education and culture. It is home to the University of New Brunswick, founded in 1785, and St. Thomas University, as well as the New Brunswick Legislative Building and several museums and galleries.
A common mix-up is choosing Saint John or Moncton because they are larger cities. Saint John is New Brunswick’s oldest incorporated city, while Moncton is a major commercial centre; neither is the provincial capital.
