What is the capital city of Botswana?
Answer
Gaborone
Answer
Gaborone
The capital city of Botswana is Gaborone.
Gaborone is Botswana's political and economic center and is also the country's largest city. It lies in southeastern Botswana near the border with South Africa, between Kgale Hill and Oodi Hill. The city is close to the Notwane River and is served by Sir Seretse Khama International Airport.
The city was selected and developed as the capital in the 1960s, shortly before Botswana became independent from Britain in 1966. Its location offered access to water and communications while avoiding direct association with a single dominant local group. Gaborone was named after Kgosi Gaborone, a chief of the Tlokwa people.
Older English colonial sources may spell the name “Gaberones,” which can cause confusion in historical references. Gaborone is sometimes called “Gabs” by residents. The city is also home to Botswana's government institutions, the Botswana Stock Exchange, and the headquarters of the Southern African Development Community, a regional organization often abbreviated SADC. It is separate from the nearby South-East District, although it serves as that district's administrative capital.
