What is the capital city of Africa's Namibia?
Answer
Windhoek
Answer
Windhoek
The capital city of Namibia is Windhoek. It is also the country's largest city and serves as Namibia's political, economic, educational, and cultural center.
Windhoek lies in central Namibia in the Khomas Highland plateau, at an elevation of roughly 1,650 meters. The city grew around a site known for hot springs used by local pastoral communities. Orlam leader Jonker Afrikaner established a settlement there in 1840, but conflict and instability later damaged it.
Windhoek was founded again in 1890 by Curt von François during the period of German colonial rule. German influence remains visible in parts of the city's architecture, including landmarks such as the Christ Church and the Alte Feste. After World War I, the territory was administered by South Africa until Namibia gained independence in 1990.
A common geography mistake is to confuse Namibia's capital with a better-known southern African capital such as Gaborone, Pretoria, or Lusaka. Windhoek is the sole national capital of Namibia, and the city is located inland rather than on the Atlantic coast. Namibia's coastal city of Walvis Bay is important economically but is not the capital.
