A 60-degree layout is especially well suited to a V6 because it permits an even 120-degree firing interval when the crankshaft and firing order are correctly designed. It also makes the engine relatively narrow, an important advantage for the transverse front-wheel-drive vehicles in which many Duratec V6 versions were installed.

Ford introduced the Duratec V6 with the 1993 Ford Mondeo. In North America, related versions powered cars such as the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, while variants also appeared in vehicles associated with Jaguar and Mazda. The family used an aluminum block and heads, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and a timing chain.

The 60-degree figure describes the angle between the two cylinder banks, not the firing interval and not the angle of each individual cylinder. A 90-degree V6 is also possible, often when an engine is derived from a V8, while 120-degree V6s exist in specialized applications.
