What is the average weight of an adult male African bush elephant?

The story behind the answer

The average weight of an adult male African bush elephant is about 6,000 kg.

The African bush elephant, also called the African savanna elephant, is the largest living land animal. Its scientific name is Loxodonta africana, and fully grown mature males commonly weigh around 5.2 to 6.9 tonnes under favorable conditions, making 6,000 kg a fair rounded average for quiz purposes.

Individual size varies with age, habitat, nutrition, and development. Some exceptional bulls become far heavier: the largest recorded specimens have been estimated at more than 10,000 kg. Females are substantially smaller, which is one reason elephant family herds are usually centered on adult females and their offspring, while mature males often live alone or in bachelor groups.

The species is distinguished by very large ears, a concave back, curved tusks, and a trunk with two finger-like tips. Its size does not prevent heat stress; the ears act as radiators, and cracked, folded skin helps retain water after bathing. A common mistake is to use the maximum possible weight as the average.
