What is the Arabic name for the congregational Friday prayer in Islam?

The story behind the answer

The Arabic name for Islam’s congregational Friday prayer is Jumu’ah.

Jumu’ah is held around the time of the regular midday prayer on Friday and includes a sermon, called the khutbah, before the congregational salah. In many communities, an imam or another qualified speaker delivers the sermon from the mosque.

The Friday service is distinct from the ordinary Dhuhr prayer performed on other days. The congregational prayer itself consists of two obligatory rak’ahs for those for whom Jumu’ah is required, replacing the usual four-rak’ah Dhuhr prayer.

Islamic legal traditions discuss exemptions and differing conditions for obligation, including circumstances involving illness, travel, or other hardship. The name Jumu’ah comes from an Arabic root associated with gathering or congregation.
