What is the American title of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?
Answer
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Answer
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
The American title of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
The title was changed for the United States edition because publisher Scholastic believed that the word “philosopher” might be less immediately appealing to American children. The American book edition therefore used Sorcerer’s Stone, and the film followed that title in the United States.
The movie itself is otherwise the same first Harry Potter story: Harry discovers that he is a wizard, attends Hogwarts, makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and investigates the magical stone protected inside the school.
International audiences sometimes see the two titles treated as separate films, but they refer to one production. The phrase “Philosopher’s Stone” remains the title used in the United Kingdom and many other territories, while “Sorcerer’s Stone” is the familiar American title.
