What is the address of Sherlock Holmes' residence?

The story behind the answer

Sherlock Holmes's residence is 221B Baker Street.

In Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, 221B Baker Street is the London lodging where Holmes works as a consulting detective and shares rooms with Dr. John Watson. The address is introduced in A Study in Scarlet, the 1887 novel that first brought Holmes and Watson together.

The “B” indicates a separate unit or upper-floor accommodation rather than a completely different street. Doyle's stories describe Holmes and Watson climbing 17 steps to their rooms, with Mrs. Hudson serving as their landlady. Many cases begin when clients arrive at the Baker Street flat seeking Holmes's help.

The address was fictional when the stories were written: Baker Street's numbering did not originally extend as far as 221. A real building later occupied numbers 219–229, and Abbey National even employed a secretary to answer letters addressed to Holmes. The Sherlock Holmes Museum now uses the famous designation, although its building lies between numbers 237 and 241.
