Jultomten is the Swedish name for the Christmas gift-bringer associated with the tomte tradition.
The Swedish word combines “jul,” meaning Christmas, with “tomte,” a household or farm spirit from Scandinavian folklore. Older tomtar were imagined as small guardians of farms and homes, while modern Jultomten developed into a Christmas figure influenced by Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas traditions.
In contemporary Sweden, Jultomten commonly brings presents on Christmas Eve. Unlike the American image of Santa arriving secretly at night, Swedish celebrations may include an adult dressed as Jultomten appearing at the family gathering and handing out gifts. Jultomten should not be confused with the Swedish straw Yule goat, another important Christmas symbol.
