What is Rick's surname in Rick and Morty?

Rick’s surname in Rick and Morty is Sanchez.

Rick Sanchez is the eccentric scientist at the center of the series and one half of its title. He is Morty Smith’s maternal grandfather and Beth Smith’s father, which explains why Beth and her children use the Smith surname while Rick uses Sanchez.

The name also connects Rick to the show’s multiverse. The series features many alternate Ricks, each generally identified by a dimension designation such as Rick C-137. Although their lives and personalities can differ, “Sanchez” is the family name used for the character across the franchise’s standard naming system.

Viewers sometimes confuse Rick’s surname with Smith because he lives with Beth’s family, or with names belonging to other characters, such as school teacher Gene V. Y. Goldenfold. Beth is also identified as Bethany Smith née Sanchez, making Rick’s family relationship explicit. “Sanchez” is therefore the single canonical surname expected in a quiz answer.
