Cars 2 is the second feature film in Pixar's Cars movie series and was released in 2011.
The film follows Lightning McQueen as he enters the World Grand Prix, but its story is largely driven by Mater's accidental involvement in an international espionage operation. That structure makes Cars 2 substantially different from the first Cars movie, which focuses on McQueen's transformation after becoming stranded in Radiator Springs.
Cars 2 visits Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London. It introduces new spy characters such as Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell, while returning characters from Radiator Springs. The film was directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis and was produced by Pixar Animation Studios.
The movie is sometimes confused with the short-form Cars Toons material, but Cars 2 is a full theatrical feature. It was also Pixar's first film released in Disney Digital 3-D and IMAX 3-D.
