Paddington Bear’s adopted surname in the Paddington stories is Brown.
The Brown family takes Paddington into its home after finding him at London’s Paddington Station. Although he arrives as a bear from Peru, the family treats him as a member of the household, and he becomes known as Paddington Brown.
The surname comes from the Brown family, whose members include Henry, Mary, Judy and Jonathan. Paddington’s identity is therefore different from his original Peruvian name, which he used before travelling to Britain.
Readers sometimes confuse Paddington’s surname with the Brown family’s London address or with the name of the railway station where he is discovered. “Brown” is the family surname he adopts after joining the household.
