What is Norway’s national day, celebrated on 17 May?

The story behind the answer

Norway’s national day, celebrated on 17 May, is Constitution Day.

The date commemorates the signing of Norway’s Constitution at Eidsvoll on 17 May 1814. The constitution followed Norway’s transfer from Denmark to Sweden after the Napoleonic Wars and established Norway as a constitutional monarchy, although the country soon entered a union with Sweden.

Modern celebrations are known for children’s parades, flags, traditional clothing, marching bands, and public speeches. Oslo hosts a famous parade that passes the Royal Palace, where the royal family traditionally greets participants.

The day is commonly called Syttende Mai, meaning “17th of May” in Norwegian. It is not a military-style national day: children’s participation and civic celebration are central features of the holiday.
