What is Norway’s highest mountain?

The story behind the answer

Galdhøpiggen is Norway’s highest mountain, rising to 2,469 metres above sea level. It stands in the Jotunheimen mountain range in southern Norway, within Lom Municipality in Innlandet county.

The mountain’s name combines galdhø, meaning a steep mountain, with piggen, meaning the peak. Its summit was first reached in 1850 by three local climbers: Steinar Sulheim, S. Flaatten, and Lars Arnesen. The route is now a popular hiking objective, although glacier crossings may require a guide or suitable equipment.

Glittertind was once sometimes listed as Norway’s highest peak because its snow and ice cap temporarily made it taller. However, Galdhøpiggen’s exposed rock summit is higher, and modern measurements consistently place it first. Galdhøpiggen is also the highest point in Northern Europe.
