What is Monsters, Inc.’s fictional city called?

The fictional city in Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. is called Monstropolis.

Monstropolis is the urban setting where Monsters, Incorporated operates and where Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan live and work. Its buildings, transport systems and advertising all reflect a society powered by energy collected from children’s screams.

The name combines “monster” with “metropolis,” making it a direct description of a large, modern monster city. The setting is not the same as the human world glimpsed through bedroom doors; the two worlds are connected by the door-storage system.

Viewers sometimes use Monsters, Inc. as if it were the city’s name, but that is the company’s name. Monstropolis is the broader community, while Monsters, Incorporated is the energy company at the center of the story.
