What is Leslie Knope's ultimate career goal in "Parks and Recreation"?

What is Leslie Knope’s ultimate career goal in Parks and Recreation? She wants to become the first female President of the United States. The ambition captures Leslie’s unusually intense optimism, political drive, and belief that public service can improve people’s lives.

Leslie, played by Amy Poehler, begins the series as a deputy director in Pawnee, Indiana’s Parks and Recreation Department. Her immediate projects are local, including transforming an abandoned construction pit into a public park. Over time, her career expands through the Pawnee City Council, the National Park Service, and federal government work.

The show treats her presidential ambition as both a running joke and a sincere character goal. The series finale flashes forward into Leslie’s future and strongly suggests that she reaches the highest levels of national politics, although it deliberately avoids spelling out every detail. Her love of binders, waffles, civic projects, and inspirational speeches all reinforce the same central idea: Leslie sees government as a force for community improvement.
