What is J.K. Rowling’s middle-grade fairy-tale book featuring the kingdom of Cornucopia?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s middle-grade fairy-tale book featuring the kingdom of Cornucopia is The Ickabog.

The Ickabog is set in the fictional kingdom of Cornucopia, which appears prosperous and happy at the beginning of the story. A frightening legend about the Ickabog becomes entangled with political power, propaganda, fear, and injustice. The book is aimed at children but includes serious themes about how false stories can shape public life.

Rowling wrote the story years earlier and originally intended it for her own children. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she released it online in installments and invited children to create illustrations. The completed book was published in November 2020, with illustrations selected from a children’s competition.

The Ickabog is separate from The Christmas Pig, another later children’s novel. It is also not part of the Harry Potter universe, despite Rowling’s use of fantasy, invented creatures, and a distinctive magical atmosphere.
