What is Jazz's full name in the show's recurring cast table?

Jazz’s full name in the show’s recurring-cast table is Jefferson Jefford. He is the loud, mischievous friend who repeatedly turns up at the Banks family home and is famously thrown out by Uncle Phil.

The character is played by Jeffrey Allen Townes, better known professionally as DJ Jazzy Jeff. Townes was Will Smith’s real-life musical partner in the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, so the sitcom folded their existing performance partnership into its story. On the show, Jazz is presented as Will’s friend from Philadelphia.

Viewers often remember only the nickname “Jazz,” or confuse the character’s identity with the actor’s stage name. “Jefferson Jefford” is the character’s listed full name, while Jeffrey A. Townes is the performer behind him. Jazz remained a recurring presence across the series rather than joining the main Banks household.
