Georgia O'Keeffe's 1936 painting of a large white flower is commonly called Jimson Weed.
The full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1. O'Keeffe painted the monumental white datura flower in 1936, enlarging a natural form so that its trumpet-shaped petals fill much of the canvas. The work reflects her long interest in close views of flowers, which encouraged viewers to notice shapes and colors they might otherwise overlook.
The title combines the plant’s common name with a numbered description. Jimson weed, also called datura, is a poisonous plant found in parts of the American Southwest. O'Keeffe grew the flowers at her New Mexico home and used them as subjects.
The painting became especially famous after its 2014 sale at auction. It set a record for the highest price paid for a painting by a female artist at that time, although auction records can change as later sales occur.
