Gandalf’s sword in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is called Glamdring.
Glamdring was forged in Gondolin during the First Age, when the hidden Elven city was ruled by Turgon. Gandalf discovers it in the troll hoard described in The Hobbit, together with Bilbo’s Sting and Thorin Oakenshield’s Orcrist. The blade’s history makes it far older than the events of the main quest.
In Tolkien’s fictional languages, Glamdring is commonly translated as “Foe-hammer.” Its name reflects its association with warfare against the enemies of the Elves. The sword also glows in the presence of Orcs, although this feature is more prominent in the surrounding narrative than in every adaptation.
Glamdring is often confused with Narsil, the sword that cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand, and with Andúril, Aragorn’s reforged sword. Those weapons belong to different characters and histories.
