Gandalf’s horse in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is called Shadowfax.
Shadowfax is a great horse of Rohan and belongs to the line of the Mearas, the remarkable horses associated with the Rohirrim. King Théoden eventually gives him to Gandalf. The horse is exceptionally swift and understands human speech, allowing Gandalf to travel rapidly during the War of the Ring.
The name refers to the horse’s coloring and speed: Tolkien describes Shadowfax as silver or grey, with a flowing mane. He carries Gandalf from Rohan toward Minas Tirith and later bears him across Middle-earth. Shadowfax is sometimes confused with horses named in Tolkien’s wider legendarium or with horses introduced in the film adaptations. Brego, for example, is a horse associated with Aragorn in the films, while Hasufel and Arod are horses used by other members of the Fellowship in the books.
