What is Champagne’s driest commonly sold sweetness category?

The story behind the answer

Brut Nature is Champagne’s driest commonly sold sweetness category.

A Brut Nature Champagne contains very little or no added sugar in the dosage applied after disgorgement. European rules generally define it as having less than 3 grams of sugar per litre, with no sugar added after the second fermentation.

The category is drier than Extra Brut and Brut. The name can cause confusion because “dry” in wine terminology often means low sweetness, while some other beverage labels use “dry” differently. Brut Nature wines can still taste fruity because grape aromas and acidity are not the same as residual sugar.

Dosage helps a producer balance acidity and style, but it does not determine whether the wine is vintage, non-vintage, rosé or blanc de blancs. Sweetness classification is a separate label category from grape blend and ageing designation.
