What is Bilbo Baggins’s surname in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo Baggins’s surname in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories is Baggins.

Bilbo is a Hobbit of Hobbiton in the Shire and lives at Bag End, a comfortable home built into a hill. In The Hobbit, the wizard Gandalf recruits him to join Thorin Oakenshield’s expedition to the Lonely Mountain.

The name Baggins identifies Bilbo’s respectable, comfort-loving family. His mother, Belladonna Took, connects him to the more adventurous Took family, creating the contrast that drives much of his character development.

Bilbo later becomes important to The Lord of the Rings because he finds the One Ring during his journey. His heir, Frodo Baggins, inherits the Ring and undertakes the quest to destroy it. Baggins is therefore shared by the two central Hobbit protagonists of Tolkien’s major Middle-earth narratives.
