What is Beth Smith's profession?

Beth Smith’s profession is horse surgeon.

Beth is an equine veterinarian who specializes in horse surgery, working at St. Equis Hospital. The profession is a recurring part of her characterization in Rick and Morty and helps explain her complicated feelings about her career and identity.

Beth once wanted to become a human surgeon, and the series repeatedly contrasts that ambition with her work as a horse specialist. Jerry’s dismissive comments sometimes imply that she is not a “real” surgeon, but the joke reflects his insecurity and Beth’s own dissatisfaction rather than an absence of medical expertise.

Her occupation is also easy to misremember because Beth is surrounded by extraordinary science, including Rick’s inventions and the show’s alternate realities. She is not presented as a pharmacist, physicist, or dentist. In later storylines, alternate versions such as Space Beth pursue very different roles, but the ordinary Beth Smith introduced in the main family setting is the horse surgeon.
