What is Aragorn’s alias in Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Aragorn uses the alias Strider in Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

When Frodo and his companions reach the village of Bree, they meet a weathered Ranger known as Strider. The name reflects how the people of Bree view the Rangers: as mysterious wanderers who travel the wild roads of the North. Strider’s true identity is Aragorn, heir of Isildur and a claimant to the throne of Gondor.

The alias helps conceal Aragorn’s heritage while he protects the Shire and watches the roads. His identity is gradually revealed as the journey continues, changing the reader’s understanding of the seemingly rough and secretive Ranger.

Strider is not Aragorn’s only name. He is also called Elessar, meaning Elfstone, and had used the name Thorongil earlier in his life. However, Strider is the specific alias attached to his first major appearance at the Prancing Pony in Bree.
