What is another name for the vitamin B1?
Answer
Thiamine
Answer
Thiamine
Another name for vitamin B1 is thiamine.
Thiamine is a water-soluble B vitamin that the body needs for energy metabolism, especially the breakdown of carbohydrates and certain amino acids. In its active coenzyme form, thiamine pyrophosphate, it helps enzymes carry out important reactions in cells. Because it is water-soluble, the body stores relatively little of it and regular dietary intake is important.
The vitamin is found in foods such as whole grains, pork, legumes, nuts, seeds, and fortified cereals. Severe deficiency can cause beriberi, which may affect the cardiovascular or nervous systems. Thiamine deficiency is also associated with Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome, particularly in people with prolonged heavy alcohol use.
“Thiamin” without the final e and “aneurine” are also recognized names, but thiamine is the standard answer to this quiz question. Vitamin B1 should not be confused with other B vitamins such as riboflavin, which is vitamin B2, or niacin, which is vitamin B3.
