What is Alfa Romeo’s four-leaf clover racing emblem called?

The story behind the answer

Alfa Romeo’s four-leaf clover racing emblem is called the Quadrifoglio.

The Italian word “quadrifoglio” means “four-leaf clover.” Alfa Romeo first used the symbol in 1923 on the racing car driven by Ugo Sivocci. The emblem was placed inside a white square, and Sivocci won the Targa Florio that year.

Sivocci later died during testing at Monza in September 1923. His car reportedly lacked the Quadrifoglio, helping create the emblem’s enduring association with luck and Alfa Romeo racing. The white square was subsequently changed to a triangle to commemorate him.

Quadrifoglio badges have appeared on Alfa Romeo’s high-performance road cars as well as its racing cars. It should not be confused with “Biscione,” the serpent symbol associated with Alfa Romeo’s broader crest, or “Scudetto,” the shield-shaped grille emblem.
