What is a traditional day off for Wimbledon players called?

The story behind the answer

The traditional day off for Wimbledon players is called Middle Sunday.

Wimbledon was historically scheduled across two weeks, with no matches played on the Sunday between them. The break gave players time to recover and allowed the tournament’s grass courts to receive maintenance before the demanding second week. It also became one of Wimbledon’s best-known traditions, alongside the all-white dress code and strawberries and cream.

Middle Sunday was not always completely free from tennis: rain delays forced play in 1991, 1997, 2004 and 2016. Wimbledon ended the regular rest-day tradition in 2022, when scheduled matches were introduced on the middle Sunday. Improved grass-court technology and maintenance made the change practical, but the traditional name remains widely recognized.
