What is a sumo wrestler’s official top-division winning record called in Japanese?

The story behind the answer

Kachi-koshi is the Japanese term for a winning record in a professional sumo tournament.

For wrestlers in divisions where bouts are generally scheduled over 15 days, a record of at least eight wins is kachi-koshi. A record of seven wins or fewer is make-koshi, meaning the wrestler has more losses than wins. The terms are especially important because tournament results affect ranking movement.

A wrestler’s rank usually rises after a kachi-koshi and falls after a make-koshi, although the exact movement depends on the rank and the size of the winning or losing margin. Ozeki wrestlers have special rules because they can become kadoban after a losing tournament.

Kachi-koshi is not the same as yūshō, which means winning the championship of a division. Several wrestlers can achieve winning records in the same tournament, but only one normally wins the division title unless a playoff is required.
