What is a drawn professional sumo bout called?
Answer
Hikiwake
Answer
Hikiwake
A drawn professional sumo bout is called a hikiwake. It is an official result used when neither wrestler can be declared the winner under the bout’s circumstances.
Draws are uncommon in modern top-division sumo because bouts usually end when one wrestler touches outside the ring or touches the ground with a body part other than the soles of the feet. A bout may also be stopped or restarted under special circumstances.
Hikiwake should not be confused with torinaoshi. Torinaoshi means a rematch, used when the judges cannot determine a clear winner or when an irregular situation requires the bout to be contested again. A rematch can produce a normal win or another disputed result.
The term also differs from fusen. A fusen is a default win, awarded when an opponent cannot compete, rather than a contest that ends in a draw.
