What is a blowout preventer in the oil and gas industry designed to control?
Answer
Uncontrolled well pressure
Answer
Uncontrolled well pressure
A blowout preventer is designed to control uncontrolled well pressure.
A blowout preventer, or BOP, is a set of specialized valves installed on an oil or gas well during drilling and completion operations. If formation fluids begin entering the wellbore unexpectedly, the BOP can seal the well, shear certain types of drill pipe, or divert flow according to the equipment and operating procedure.
The system is a critical barrier between underground pressure and the surface. BOP stacks commonly include annular preventers and ram preventers, which use different mechanisms to close around or across the wellbore.
A BOP does not make a well permanently safe by itself. Crews must test, maintain, and operate it correctly, while drilling mud and other barriers help manage pressure. The term is sometimes mistakenly expanded as “blowout prevention,” but the equipment is called a blowout preventer.
