What international racing competition is central to Pixar’s Cars 2?

The story behind the answer

The World Grand Prix is the international racing competition central to Pixar’s Cars 2.

Sir Miles Axlerod creates the event to promote Allinol, a new alternative fuel. The race travels through Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London, giving the sequel a much broader setting than the first Cars film. Lightning McQueen enters the competition, while Mater becomes involved in an international espionage storyline.

The World Grand Prix is fictional, but Cars 2 borrows visual ideas from real-world motorsport, including street circuits, pit crews, national crowds, and multiple race stages. The competition also supplies the movie’s main public conflict as racers debate the performance of Allinol.

The Piston Cup is a different fictional championship associated with American stock-car racing in the Cars universe. It is especially important in Cars and Cars 3, while Cars 2 shifts its focus to the World Grand Prix and spy adventure.
