Ron Swanson’s alter ego, Duke Silver, plays the saxophone in “Parks and Recreation.” He performs smooth jazz at Cozy’s Bar in Eagleton while keeping his musical identity secret from most of his coworkers.
Duke Silver first becomes part of the show’s mythology in the season-two episode “Practice Date.” Tom Haverford discovers that the seemingly stern, anti-government Ron is also a polished nightclub musician with a devoted audience, especially among older women. The contrast between Ron’s gruff public persona and Duke’s romantic stage presence creates one of the series’ recurring jokes.
The instrument is sometimes remembered simply as a horn, but the show specifically identifies it as a saxophone; the character is associated with a tenor saxophone. The joke gained an extra layer because Nick Offerman, who played Ron, really does play saxophone. Duke eventually performs publicly at the Pawnee-Eagleton Unity Concert, making the secret identity part of Ron’s life more visible.
