What Indian Prime Minister guided India through its early years of independence after 1947?

The story behind the answer

Jawaharlal Nehru guided India through its early independence years as the country’s first prime minister. He took office on August 15, 1947, when British rule ended and India became independent.

Nehru led the government during an exceptionally difficult founding period. Independence came alongside the Partition of British India, which created India and Pakistan and triggered mass migration, communal violence, and a major refugee crisis. His government also had to establish national institutions and integrate hundreds of princely states into the new union.

Nehru helped shape India’s parliamentary democracy, supported a mixed economy with a large public sector, and promoted scientific and industrial development. He remained prime minister until his death on May 27, 1964, serving for nearly 17 years. He is also closely associated with the “Tryst with Destiny” speech delivered at independence. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was another major independence-era leader, but Nehru is the canonical answer to this question.
