A colonial drummer
Answer
A colonial drummer
A colonial drummer appeared on the reverse of the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial quarter.
The quarter was part of a special coin series issued to mark the 200th anniversary of American independence. Its reverse showed a colonial drummer beside a victory torch and thirteen stars, while the obverse retained George Washington’s portrait.
The design was created by Jack L. Ahr after a nationwide competition. Bicentennial quarters were dated “1776–1976,” unlike ordinary coins that carried a single year. They were produced in large numbers for circulation, so many remain familiar to collectors and the general public.
The Liberty Bell is a plausible mix-up because it appeared on the reverse of the Bicentennial half dollar, not the quarter. The Eisenhower dollar used a separate reverse design featuring the Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon.
