What hit song by Ray Charles features the line "Georgia, Georgia..."?

Ray Charles’s hit song featuring the line “Georgia, Georgia...” is “Georgia on My Mind.”

The song was written by composer Hoagy Carmichael and lyricist Stuart Gorrell and first recorded in 1930. Ray Charles recorded his celebrated version for the 1960 album The Genius Hits the Road, transforming the older jazz-pop standard into a deeply personal soul performance.

Charles was born in Albany, Georgia, and his connection to the state helped make his interpretation especially resonant. His recording reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the version most listeners associate with the song. The performance blends blues phrasing, jazz harmony, gospel feeling and Charles’s unmistakable piano-and-vocal style.

A frequent misconception is that Charles wrote the song. He did not: Carmichael composed the music and Gorrell wrote the lyrics. Nor was the song originally written as Georgia’s official state anthem. Georgia adopted it as its state song in 1979, after Charles’s recording had made the title famous worldwide. The song has since been recorded by many other artists, but Charles’s rendition remains the canonical hit version.
