Mark English became the first Irishman to win an individual gold medal at the outdoor European Athletics Championships by taking the men’s 800 metres title in Birmingham in 2026.

English won the final in 1:45.26, finishing ahead of Croatia’s Marino Bloudek and Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui. The result completed a long European championship journey for the Donegal athlete, who had previously won five senior European medals without an outdoor individual title.

His earlier European medals included outdoor bronze medals in 2014 and 2022, plus medals at the European Indoor Championships. He finally reached the top step at age 33.

Ireland had already produced major individual European champions, including Sonia O’Sullivan and Ciara Mageean. English’s distinction is narrower: he was the first Irish male athlete to win an individual outdoor title at these championships.
