Independence Hall, originally the Pennsylvania State House, hosted the Declaration of Independence debate.
The building stands in Philadelphia and was the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress. Delegates debated the Declaration there in June and July 1776, then adopted the document on July 4. The building was later renamed Independence Hall because of its association with the founding of the United States.
Independence Hall also played a central role in the creation of the United States Constitution. The Constitutional Convention met there in 1787, making the site important to both the Declaration and the Constitution.
The name can cause confusion because the building was not originally called Independence Hall. “Pennsylvania State House” was its colonial name. It is part of Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, alongside the Liberty Bell Center and other historic sites connected with the founding era.
