The chickpea plant is typically 20–50 cm tall.

Chickpea, or Cicer arietinum, is a compact annual legume rather than a tall climbing plant. Its stems carry small, feathery leaves, and its pods usually contain two or three seeds. The plant’s modest height suits many dry farming regions, where it can mature on limited moisture.

Two major cultivated types help explain why chickpeas look different in markets. Desi chickpeas are smaller and often dark-coated, while Kabuli chickpeas are larger, rounder, and usually cream-colored. Both belong to the same species, but their seeds and growing conditions differ.

A common mix-up is confusing the plant’s height with the size of the mature seed or with the height of other pulse crops. Chickpeas are also frequently called garbanzo beans, while “chana” is widely used in South Asian food contexts.
