What giant rocket launched the Apollo lunar missions?

The story behind the answer

What giant rocket launched the Apollo lunar missions? Saturn V launched them. This towering, three-stage vehicle was NASA’s heavy-lift launcher for the crewed lunar flights, sending the Apollo spacecraft out of Earth orbit and onto a Moon-bound trajectory.

The Saturn V stood about 363 feet (110.6 meters) tall. Its first stage used five F-1 engines burning kerosene and liquid oxygen; the upper stages used liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The third stage could restart in space, an essential capability for the translunar-injection burn that sent Apollo crews toward the Moon.

Apollo 4, launched in 1967, was the first Saturn V flight. Apollo 8 became its first crewed flight in December 1968, and Apollo 11 used it for the first crewed lunar landing in July 1969. Saturn V also launched later Apollo missions and Skylab.

A common mix-up is Saturn IB, which launched Apollo 7 and some Earth-orbit tests but lacked the power needed for the lunar missions. Saturn V was a launch vehicle, not the Apollo spacecraft itself: it carried the command and service module and lunar module into space.
