The black mamba belongs to the genus Dendroaspis.
Dendroaspis is a genus of slender, highly venomous African snakes in the family Elapidae. The black mamba’s full scientific name is Dendroaspis polylepis, while related species include the eastern green mamba, western green mamba, and Jameson’s mamba.
The name “black mamba” does not usually describe the snake’s body color. Adults are commonly gray, olive, or brownish, while the inside of the mouth is dark, producing the memorable common name. The species is widely distributed across parts of sub-Saharan Africa and uses both ground and elevated habitats.
Black mambas are often portrayed as relentlessly aggressive, but that reputation is exaggerated. They generally avoid people when escape is possible, although they can move quickly and defend themselves if threatened. Their venom makes rapid medical treatment essential after a bite.
