What genus contains all species commonly known as flying snakes?
Answer
Chrysopelea
Answer
Chrysopelea
Chrysopelea is the genus that contains all species commonly known as flying snakes.
Flying snakes are arboreal colubrid snakes found in South and Southeast Asia. They do not truly fly with powered wingbeats. Instead, a snake launches from a branch, flattens its body, spreads its ribs, and bends its body into an undulating shape while steering through the air.
This unusual body shape increases the snake’s effective width and helps it glide between trees. Flying snakes can travel significant horizontal distances relative to the height from which they launch, allowing them to move through the forest canopy without descending to the ground.
The genus Chrysopelea includes several species, such as the paradise flying snake, the golden flying snake, and the Sri Lankan flying snake. They are often confused with other tree-dwelling snakes, but only Chrysopelea species are formally classified as flying snakes.
